I decided to try this, and it did indeed remove a bit of low end. I've been searching for a solution to this and found a post somewhere online where Seymour Duncan (no less) recommended soldering in a 47nF capacitor in series with the neck humbucker.
However, I still had a bunch of Flying Vs with PAF style pickups where it wasn't appropriate to use any of those techniques. All the solutions have worked really well, and I've been happy with the results. To get a workable tone, I've been using strat coils, mini humbuckers, and full sized humbuckers wired in parallel. I do like neck pickup tones though, due to Uli Jon Roth really. The only neck HB which sort of worked for me was the Duncan Jazz, but I still wasn't happy. But for me, I always just switched to the neck humbucker and immediately lost my sound.
Moore managed it, and also Bonamassa, Schenker etc, so evidently it is possible. This box allows you the option of having an on board treble and mid control for tone shaping in addition to your volume control and pickup selector, or the ability to have a standard Volume/passive tone control (depending on how you wire it).After years of playing and experimentation, I still don't understand how people get neck humbuckers to even remotely cut through in a live situation. The black box contains an active preamp which is powered by one 9v battery. The silver series have great, sparkling clean tones which work well for a variety of styles, and remain articulate under heavy distortion. The "Reds" which had a red dot in the logo and were hot, high output active pickups oriented towards heavy metal players, the "Blues" which had a blue dot beside the logo which were lower output pickups more suitable for classic rock style tones, and the Silver Series, which these belong to fell somewhere in between, likely being the most versatile of the 3 series. Reflex had 3 different series of pickups, produced for both guitars and basses which can be differentiated by the colored dot on the front of the pickup beside the Reflex logo. Reflex Silver Series pickups have also been used on a number of albums by the German Death Metal band Defeated Sanity. Reflex pickups were notably used by Uli Jon Roth. The pickups were distributed by Jackson/Charvel in the and could be bought as an upgrade option on their guitars. Reflex was a British company founded by Jon Oram which produced active pickups.
